Chitukuko
Community School

Chitukuko Community School is the only learning institution that is promoting education to pupils in the age of 4 – 20 years from pre-grade to grade 9 in the entire community of Malcolm Compound whose population stands at 7,000 (seven thousand).

The school started as a community school in 2000 to answer the education needs of the most vulnerable and orphaned children who are the least considered in the country. It started with 20 pupils and 1 volunteer teacher. It was located in someone’s farm. In 2014, the owner of the land gave the squatters enough land to build the school (100x100) meters. The community sat and came up with the committee which consulted NGOs and the Government in order to build a school as it first existed in a mud and thatched roof structure. Later, in 2016 Build It International (NGO) came in and built a 1x3 classroom block, 1 house and 1x4 ablution block. This school is located along Mungwi Road off Marcopdo tiles limited company to farmers.

Challenges at Chitukuko

Later in 2018, government came in and put up a 1x3 classroom block which is still on the slab level. In 2020, two staff houses and 1x7 VIP toilets were built by Build It International (BII).
Despite these infrastructure developments the school remains a community school with its initial purpose of providing quality education to the most vulnerable and orphaned pupils. Some of these children come from impoverished homes where the effect of HIV/AIDs and economic hardship has its telling effects. Most of the parents work as farm workers, retail traders, piece workers the least paid jobs in Zambia.

In this situation, Chitukuko Community remains as an oasis of hope in providing education as children desire for a different bright future.

Incidents of pupils collapsing in class due to hunger, coming to school with 1 exercise book, no pen or pencil at all, drop outs, absenteeism as a result of doing odd jobs to feed the family, parents hiding books for a girl child are not only a fiction but a reality.
School management through the parent school committees has had huge battle convincing the parents to the importance of education to their ones which over the years is bearing fruit. At the height of this, the teacher remains the only resource person on which the future of these children depends. The management is very aware of this and a number of interventions have been put in place to ensure that pupils are engaged in learning and encouraged to remain in school.

Nonetheless, the real challenge has been the progression of pupils to Grade 8 and 10 after leaving Chitukuko Community School as well as payment of non-government employed teachers. The school lacks secondary school facilities and funds. In this case, many school going children opt to remain idling in the compound rather than covering long distances to the nearest secondary school, others fall off as they cannot meet the financial cost demand, painful as it is others opt to respect grades in the hope that a miracle shall happen.
In its resolve to reduce drop outs in the community, the school management is in the process of engaging several stakeholders to help complete the 1x3 classroom block which is on existence but on slab level. This is in the view of splitting the multi-grades which is going on and enough room for junior secondary pupils. Hence the current problems faced by the community such as early marriages, prostitution, drug abuse, teen pregnancies, crime activities shall if not reduced be eradicated as learners of the age group 13 to 24 years shall not have a reason of not being in school as construction of 1x3 classroom block will keep this age group of the vices.
